The technology to stop violence n society will soon be available.
From ubiquitous computers that create birth-to-death dossiers on
each individual to nanocomputer implants that check and adjust body
chemistry to keep everyone "calm, cool, and collected," the technology
of the early 21st century will amaze. Surprisingly, the monetary
costs of such gadgetry will not be prohibitive; in some cases it
may be cheaper than maintaining the current criminal justice system.
But what about the social costs-such as losses of privacy and even
humanity? These and other issues will be examined. Finally, an alternative
nontechnical approach to curtailing violence will be suggested-one
that respects human worth and cultural diversity while reducing
fear and violence and greatly enhancing the quality of life in our
communities. |

Sponsored by Police Futurists International (PFI), this panel
will discuss emerging technologies in policing and describe the
benefit they represent in increasing police effectiveness. With
technology, however, comes the potential for abuse or a challenge
to the balance maintained between protecting society as a whole
and individual rights. Panelists will include police experts in
emerging technologies, representatives of the telecommunications
industry who are resisting law enforcement efforts to have ready
access to digital telephony, and practitioners in criminal justice
disciplines. The discussion will not only examine appropriate uses
of technology, but ethical implications of technology applications. |

law enforcement needs statewide; the changing role of partnering
private security/police with public sector police, as presented
by a former police chief and a Fortune 500 corporate security director;
alternative models of managing convicted offenders in the future;
how demilitarized technologies have future police applications;
how computer crime will impact society in the future and how police
will combat it. |
